The Xbox Series X has been flying off the shelves since its release on November 10th. As of March 26th, 2021 it remains extremely difficult to get your hands on the latest flagship console from Microsoft. It looks as if finding the Xbox Series X in stock will remain a difficult challenge in early 2021.

Xbox Series X Unboxing 2021

Xbox Series X Initial Impressions

I really like the packaging design choices. The simple yet bold color choice really makes a visual impact. The green color is consistent with the Xbox branding we are all familiar with. The choice to use pull tabs makes it super convenient as it requires no cutting of tape to get into the package. I would like to see more tech products packaged in this manor as it really improves the unboxing experience.

Controller and Included Accessories

Inside the box you will find the console itself and the accessory pack. The pack includes the controller, HDMI 2.1 cable, power cable, and two Duracell AA batteries. The HDMI 2.1 cable is capable of supporting up to 4K resolutions at 120Hz refresh rates. It is great to see a quality HDMI cable included with the console.

The controller has a solid feel in the hands and the grip is very comfortable. It feels very similar to previous generations of Xbox controllers. While the consistent experience is certainly a plus the controller is definitely not as innovative as the controller included with the Sony PS5 console. That said I don’t think most people will have any major complaints about the feel of the controller. Some people will want to purchase the Xbox Elite Controller. The Elite Controller is competitively priced but it would have been nice to have it included with the console at the $499 price point. The choice to use AA batteries is consistent with previous generations of Xbox controllers. The jury is still out on whether that is really the best choice in 2021. Rechargeable battery technology has came a long way and can provide hours of runtime on a charge. I am not sure that changing AA batteries should be necessary in an Xbox controller in 2021. I am thinking it may be a tactic to help sell the Elite Controller as most people would likely prefer to not have to replace batteries.

The Xbox Series X console comes nicely wrapped in a soft elegant wrap. The design prominently features “Power Your Dreams” on the packaging. The overall quality of the wrap feels excellent and easily rivals the quality of packaging you see with Apple products.

The Xbox Series X quite literally looks like a box. It’s a very fitting name for a black tower measuring about 6” by 6” by 12”, with hard square corners. The sides are smooth in texture and flat black in color, while the top has green accents that look very similar to the original Xbox. The overall design is simple yet sleek and minimalist.

The choice in style is largely dictated by function. Microsoft really put performance as the top priority with this console. The goal was to be at least twice as powerful as the previous generation and to be virtually silent. That was an ambitious goal that Microsoft set out to achieve.
In order to increase airflow Microsoft opted for a split motherboard design for the Series X console. This was the decision that determined the form factor of the Xbox Series X.

Gabe Newell of Valve expressed his approval of the Xbox Series X design. He quoted that “PC gaming has been at the forefront when it comes to graphics fidelity and high frame rates. It’s about time the next-gen consoles caught up even if that means resembling the form factor of a personal computer.”

Overall Impressions of Xbox Series X Console

Overall the console looks like it will be impressive for sure. I am glad to see a console generation that is attempting to rival PC level graphics and hardware specs. This is a welcome change from the vastly inferior console gaming experiences from the past. The demand for the product is through the roof at this time. Check the latest restock update here.
